The following is a list of programs available for 3rd grade through adult.  Please call our office to speak to our staff about any of these programs and to get information on arranging a trip.

FORESTRY:  Year Round / Indoors and Outdoors

Students will learn basic tree identification and the life history of a tree by hands-on examination.  We will learn how and why forests are managed.  This program can be adapted for school groups who are interested in Forest Ecology or for Scout groups to meet the requirements for the Webelos Forester Badge.

EXPLORING OWLS:  Year Round / Indoors

In this workshop, we will be learning about the fascinating world of owls.  We will explore these specialized predators through posters, charts and museum mounts.  The students will also learn the owls' habits and relationship to our environment by dissecting an owl pellet.

BASIC MAP AND COMPASS:  Year Round / Indoors and Outdoors

In this hands-on program students will learn the basics of map reading and compass use.  We will then go out and try a small compass course near the museum to test their skills.

ADVANCED MAP AND COMPASS:  Year Round / Indoors and Outdoors

** Pre-requisite: Students must have taken Basic Map and Compass within 1 year prior.

In this course students build upon their skills learned in basic map and compass, including the use of contour lines and basic topography.

BASIC OUTDOOR COOKING:  March - November / Outdoors

Students will prepare their own meal and dessert over and open campfire.  They will learn sanitary food preparation and cooking techniques.  Food includes hot dogs on a stick, snake bread and a peach or apple dessert.

ADVANCED OUTDOOR COOKING:  March - November / Outdoors

** Pre-requisite:  Students must have taken Basic Outdoor Cooking  and Fire building within 1 year prior.

Students will build upon the skills learned in basic outdoor cooking and the fire building Classes.  Since they are preparing a more elaborate meal, this class requires 1 1/2 hours for groups over 10 and 2 hours for groups over 20.  Participants prepare a simple tin foil stew, bread in a bag and a dessert.

GEOLOGY / EARTH SCIENCE:  Year Round / Indoors or Outdoors

In this course we will be discussing what the earth is made of.  We'll learn about the different types of rocks and how they are formed, mountain formation, earthquakes, fossils, and volcanoes.  Students will also learn about basic rock identification and how rocks are useful to us.  Students will also make a fossil cast to take home.  Please allow extra time for groups over 10.  This program meets the requirements of the Webelos Badge.

ENDANGERED SPECIES:  Year Round / Indoors

In this program we will discuss why animals and plants are on the verge of extinction.  Students will learn about the reasons for things becoming endangered and learn what they can do to help.  Students will get a chance to try some problem solving activities to see what solutions they can come up with.
