OCTOBER 2008

4th,  Saturday / 8:00 a.m. -                 BREAKFAST WITH THE BIRDS WALK

Fall migration is in full swing.  We’ll search for species that are just passing through in addition to observing our full-time resident species.  This is a moderate to slow-paced walk.  Binoculars are necessary, and a field guide is helpful.  Refreshments will be available shortly before and after the walk in the museum.  Space is limited so call us to reserve a place.

Ages: 7 to adult            Register by Noon on October 3rd.

5th,  Sunday / 11:00 a.m. -                 HAWK WATCHING

Join us for an opportunity to see large raptors and vultures migrating across the horizon.  Please meet at the kiosk in our parking lot for the short walk over to the Hawk Watch at Butler Sanctuary.  Bring binoculars, water, and a snack.  Have a jacket on hand as it is usually quite breezy and chilly at the Hawk Watch.  Program will be cancelled if it is raining.

Ages:  All ages are welcome

11th,  Saturday / 10:00 a.m. -                 BIRD BANDING

Show up for this unique opportunity to see live birds up close.  This program will cover topics like migration, feeding habits, habitat preference, and the importance of bird banding for bird conservation.  This program will take place in the amphitheater behind the museum but will be cancelled in the event of rain.

Ages: All ages welcome

12th,  Sunday / 1:00 p.m. -                 CHILDREN'S NATURE HIKE

All ages are welcome on this hike designed especially for kids.  Children will visit four different habitats and look for signs of animal life.  We will look for tracks, buck rubs, and bird nests.  We’ll search for natural treasures such as deer bones and owl pellets.

Ages: All ages welcome

19th,  Sunday / 11:30 a.m. -                 LOST POND HIKE

Enjoy the fall foliage and scenery during a 1 mile walk to Lost Pond.  Bring a lunch to eat when we reach our destination.  After our lunch, we’ll make our way back to the museum.  Consider bringing binoculars and/or a camera as there will be ample time for photos and wildlife observation.

Ages:  6 to Adult

24th,  Friday / 7:30 p.m. -                 HALLOWEEN NIGHT HIKE

Come join us for an evening of fun and adventure.  There will be two short hikes for ages 7 and under and ages 8 - 12, which will lead us through the spooky forest of Westmoreland.  We will be discovering tricks and treats along the way left by trolls of the forest.  Following our walk, join us for cider, games and a costume contest.
