NOVEMBER 2008

1st, Saturday / 8:00 a.m. -                 BREAKFAST WITH THE BIRDS WALK

Fall migration is nearly over for many species.  We’ll be on the lookout for winter residents like juncos, white-throated sparrows, and winter wren.  This is a moderate to slow-paced walk.  Binoculars are necessary and a field guide is helpful.  Space is limited so call us to reserve a place.

Ages:  7 to Adult                      Register by 12 noon, Friday, October 31st

2nd, Sunday / 1:00p.m. -                   LEAST TRAVELED PATH / Sentry Ridge Trail

Be a part of this extended hike to a section of the sanctuary that sees far fewer footsteps.  This will be great exercise and an opportunity for many to venture out onto a new trail.  Please come prepared to spend a few hours out on the trail.  Participants should consider bringing water and a snack.

Ages:  10 to adult

8th, Saturday / 1:00 p.m. -               TINY TOTS BIRDFEEDER WORKSHOP

The "wee" ones will have a great time at this workshop.  We will be constructing some very simple bird feeders out of materials you can find at home.  Participants will have the option of hanging the feeders at Westmoreland's bird feeding station or taking them home.  Refreshments will be served.

Ages:  Ages 3 and older.

9th, Sunday / 1:00 p.m. -                       WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA HIKE

The wildlife management area is not open to the public, so don’t miss this chance to enjoy it!  Discover the floodplain at the Mianus River, a 200-year-old cemetery and bluebird fields.  Wear long pants.  We will meet at the museum and carpool to the area.

Ages:  7 and older

15th, Saturday  / 10:00 a.m. -           BIRD FEEDER CONSTRUCTION

This is a great program for anyone interested in birds and bird feeding.  We will cover all the basics of bird feeding.  You’ll make a great bird feeder to get started, to add to your collection, or give to someone as a gift.  Registration is required since space is limited.

Ages: 6 to Adult                       Register by Wednesday, November 12th

Fee: $4 per bird feeder for members

$6 per bird feeder for non-members

16th, Sunday / 1:00 p.m. -    HABITAT IMPROVEMENT / Clearing Nichol's Field

We are looking for all persons interested in helping clear brush and invasive vegetation in Nichol’s Field (the small clearing at the beginning of the Easy Loop Trail).  Anyone willing to help should bring work gloves and hand tools for cutting shrubs, vines, and raspberry bushes.  Don’t forget water and a snack, too.  Show up any time from 1-5 p.m. to help.

Ages: 10 to Adult

22nd, Saturday  / 10:00 a.m. -           CHILDREN'S NATURE HIKE

All ages are welcome on this hike designed especially for kids.  Children will visit four different habitats and look for signs of animal life.  We will look for tracks, buck rubs, and bird nests.  We’ll search for natural treasures such as deer bones and owl pellets.

Ages:  All ages welcome.

23rd, Sunday / 1:00 p.m. -                LEAST TRAVELED PATH

Join us on this hike along some of the trails least traveled by visitors.  There is no telling what we will hear and see along the way.  Dress for the weather.
