APRIL 2010

3rd, Saturday          BREAKFAST WITH THE BIRDS WALK

9:00 a.m.                                CoSponsored by Wild Birds Unlimited

Join the first bird walk of the spring.  Believe it or not, spring migration has already begun!  This is a great time to say “goodbye” to lingering winter species and “hello” to our summer birds.  Bring binoculars.  Most appropriate for older children and adults, but all ages are welcome.

Ages: 7 to Adult                       Register by Friday, April 2nd

AMPHIBIAN NIGHT HIKE

9th, Friday

6:30 p.m.   / Ages 8 and under

7:30 p.m. / Ages 9 and older

Come along as Herpetologist Peter R. Warny, Jr. of Port Washington, NY.  joins our staff to lead us on a hike to Bechtel Lake in search of amphibians.  The 7:30 hike will be a 1/4 mile uphill hike to a vernal pool which comes alive this time of year as frogs and salamanders come out of hibernation and begin to breed.  Wear boots and bring a flashlight.

Ages: All ages welcome          Pre-register by: April 8th

10th, Saturday        DISCOVERING TURTLES AND SETTING THE TURTLE TRAPS

3:00 p.m.

Join us as we learn about our resident turtles and then head out on a short hike down to Bechtel Lake.  Once there, we will learn about our turtle monitoring program and watch as our staff sets turtle traps.  These traps allow us to safely catch various turtles so we can record information about them and mark them for future identification.  While we check them daily, you can join us again on April 26th for our follow-up Pond Study/Turtle trap program to see what we have caught and how it is going.

Ages: All ages welcome

11th, Sunday          CHILDREN’S SCAVENGER HUNT

Join us for a nature scavenger hunt.  Participants will get a list of natural items found within a search area.  Prizes will be awarded for various categories, based on age and items found.

17th, Saturday                        BIRD BANDING DEMONSTRATION

9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.           Co-Sponsored by Wild Birds Unlimited

Bird banding is one of our longest running conservation projects.  Stop by any time between 9 and 11am to learn what it’s all about.  We will be safely capturing, banding, and releasing wild songbirds.  Poor weather (wind, rain, etc) will cancel the program.

All ages welcome

18th, Sunday           CHESTNUT RIDGE ROAD CLEANUP

10:00 a.m.

Please join us for a “neighborhood” cleanup before EARTH DAY.  We’ll patrol a 1-mile stretch of Chestnut Ridge Road adjacent to the sanctuary in an effort to pick up litter.  What a perfect way to give back to the community and the planet and offer a few volunteer hours.  Please wear gloves for picking up litter (bottles, cans, paper, etc).

All ages welcome

24th, Saturday        EARTH DAY BIRDS AND BLOOMS HIKE

10:00 a.m.

Come on out and celebrate Earth Day with us.  Certain flowers and birds like to get a jump on the others.  We will visit all the hotspots of our feathered and flowered friends, while strolling through the spring forest.

Ages:  7 to adult

25th, Sunday          POND STUDY / TURTLE TRAP MONITORING

2:00 p.m.

Join us for our ever-popular pond study program as we dip our nets into Bechtel Lake.  We’ll look for tadpoles, sunfish, and dragon fly larvae.  Then stick around to watch our naturalist venture out to our turtle traps to see what we got.  If we are lucky, you’ll get a chance to see how we mark a turtle for identification before releasing it back into the pond.

Ages: All ages’ welcome
